Individual counseling sessions are also an option. This form of behavioral therapy increases the chances of quitting -- perhaps more so than other types of counseling. Brief advice from a physician to an individual, lasting as little as 3 to 5 minutes, has been shown to produce higher cessation rates than no advice.(6,40) And the more time spent with the individual, the better the outcome. A smoker should look for a trained counselor or a physician with whom he/she feels comfortable and easily able to discuss the difficulties of cessation. Individually tailored sessions that address the specific problems of a smoker are most desired.
